Old Norse Poetry and Linguistic Thought

Mikael Males (University of Oslo)

Tuesday, March 12, 10:30AM-12PM & 1–3PM

Van-Pelt-Dietrich Library, Kislak Center, Cusack Seminar Room 629

From Mikael Males: In this two-part workshop, we will read a selection of Old Norse texts in original and translation. By reading two stanzas in the original, we will learn the fundamental characteristics of the branch of poetry, which is unique to Norse tradition - skaldic poetry. We will also discuss how the poetic tradition interfered in the translation of texts from Latin to Norse. Finally, we will read a selection of narrative grammatical texts in translation, with an emphasis on local adaptation of the grammatical tradition.

Mikael Males is an Associate Professor of Old Norse Philology at the University of Oslo. His recent book, Snorre och sagorna. De isländska källorna till vår äldre kulturhistoria, shows that medieval Icelandic authors drew on local and Latin traditions in order to position Scandinavian literature on a global scene. Males’s other publications deal with poetic archaization, Norse translations from Latin, allegorical modalities in Old Norse literature, and medieval etymology.
