Shaping the Text-Block: Textual Space and Visual Image in Late-Medieval Line-Fillers
Jessica Brantley, Yale University

Line-fillers are one of the most common, yet still under-thought, design features of late-medieval devotional books. Visual place-holders that fill out what would otherwise be empty space at the end of a line of text, they both play a textual role and assert the rights of the image to the space of the text-block. By examining a number of late-medieval manuscripts that contain unusually significant line-fillers, this talk will explore this very familiar and yet surprisingly revealing conjunction of text with image.
