The Folger Shakespeare Library is seeking a Program Assistant to join our Folger Institute team. The Folger Institute’s mission is to foster vital research questions, gather knowledge communities, and stimulate collections-based research. Programming includes: fellowships, seminars and workshops on specialized early modern subjects, weekend workshops, academic conferences on field-changing topics, and collaborative research initiatives, all of which bring together scholars from across the globe to work with the Folger’s collections. The Program Assistant (PA) will work closely with colleagues across the institution to ensure that the Institute’s programs run smoothly. The PA manages the Executive Director of the Folger Institute’s calendar, fields inquiries regarding Institute programs, ensures all programming is updated on the institution wide calendar, processes invoices and payments, and serves as one of the primary points of contact for the departmental questions or needs. The PA manages logistics for the fellowships program, including but not limited to; assisting with applications, coordinating stipends for visiting fellows, coordinating lodging with the Properties Manager, coordinating with the Collections staff for fellowship orientations, and providing on-site support to the fellows. This individual is the coordinator for the department’s digital records, and works closely with colleagues to ensure that databases are up to date and integrate well with other departments. The PA also collaborates with colleagues to maintain and improve online resources and local area guides. The PA will participate in a variety of special projects, which range from one day special events to multiday programs with undergraduate students.

 

This position is full time, Monday through Friday, with a generous benefits package. Occasional evenings and weekends are required to provide program support.
 
Our ideal candidate will be proactive, with a strong interest in the Folger and its programs and activities, and in becoming an integral part of the office of the Executive Director of the Folger Institute. Candidates must be able to interact confidently and tactfully with advanced scholars, and maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of their work. Applicants for this position are required to have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years professional experience in an administrative role in an academic, non-profit, or humanities research environment. This position requires excellent interpersonal, problem solving, analytical, communication, and organizational skills; the ability to coordinate multiple projects with competing deadlines; and a willingness to work in a team atmosphere. Strong written communication and editing skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and SQL-based databases is needed. Knowledge of the early modern period (c. 1450-1750) is useful but not required.
