Durham IMEMS Slater Fellowship 2019-20

November 11, 2018

University College and the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS) at Durham University invites applications for the 2019/20 Slater Fellowship, a three-month residential, senior fellowship at Durham University.

The Slater Fellowship is provided by University College and offers the post holder full board and accommodation for one University term, membership of University College’s Senior Common Room, and £200 towards travel expenses.

During tenure, fellows are expected to engage in academic work within their subject, to participate fully in the life of the College and the Institute, and to deliver a public lecture or seminar hosted within College and organised jointly with IMEMS. Both the College and IMEMS must be acknowledged in any resulting output form the Fellowship.

Fellows will be entitled to full use of Durham University's Library collections, including the archives and special collections held at Palace Green Library. They will also be able to access the Durham Cathedral Library and Ushaw College Library collections as well as others in the area (subject to availability). Limited workspace may be available at IMEMS on request.

To be eligible for the post, applicants must hold a senior position at another University and have research interests that fall within the scope of IMEMS.

How to apply

Applicants should submit a CV and a brief summary of what they propose to work on during their time at Durham (maximum one side of A4). They must demonstrate how their proposed research complements or ties in with existing IMEMS research strands, or the research of individual members of the Institute. Proposals for projects involving Durham staff or postgraduate students and those which are interdisciplinary in nature are particularly welcome. Proposals for research using primary source material in the collections held in Palace Green Library, Durham Cathedral Library and Ushaw College Library are also encouraged.

For 2019/20 it is likely that the Fellowship will be for Michaelmas term (07 October – 13 December 2019). When applying, please indicate your availability during the academic year 2019/20, noting that the timing of the Fellowship is variable depending on the availability of accommodation. Some flexibility may be possible, but applicants should ideally be available during these dates.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 30 November 2018. Please submit your application to [email protected].

We will aim to inform applicants of the outcome by Christmas 2018.
