The Center for Medieval Studies, the Department of Art History & Music, and the Center for Jewish Studies are pleased to announce a concert next week at Fordham's Rose Hill campus in the Bronx:
Memoria SefardÃ: Performing Sephardic Songs through Time and Space
Dr. Judith Cohen (York University)
Tuesday October 29, 6:00pm
Butler Commons, Duane Library, Fordham Rose Hill
Sephardic songs in Ladino/ Judeo-Spanish are often performed by early music groups - but are they early music? Ethnomusicologist and singer Dr. Judith Cohen explores medieval and not-so-medieval roots of this intriguing repertoire, from the early Hispano-Jewish poets, to traditional ballads of kings and queens, songs of the Jewish calendar cycle, songs of love and its loss, across the Mediterranean in time and space.
