The Inaugural Durham History of the Book Conference: Bibliophilia and Bibliophobia

Hatfield College, Durham, UK, 26-27 March 2020

Plenary speakers:

Deborah McGrady (Virginia University) 

Ada Palmer (University of Chicago)

Proposals are invited for 20-minute papers on the subject of ‘Bibliophilia and bibliophobia’ in the medieval and early modern history of the book.

Proposals can relate to any of the following themes:

Books and the emotions (books as objects or expressions of fear, hate, love, friendship, enmity…)

Books and devotion or obsession

Book acquisition, book collecting and libraries

Book burning / the destruction of books

The banning of books / censorship

Please send an abstract of max. 250 words along with your name, affiliation and contact details to [email protected] by 05 August 2019. Complete panel proposals are also welcome: please include an abstract for the panel as well as individual paper abstracts.
