Diploma in Medieval Studies

The Diploma in Medieval Studies, created at Louvain-la-Neuve in 1991 by the Fédération Internationale des Instituts d’Etudes Médiévales (FIDEM), is organised in the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme. More than twenty European and extra-European universities are involved.

The courses, which are taught in Rome, focus on methodology and teaching of auxiliary disciplines: Classical Latin, Medieval Latin, History of Libraries, Palaeography, Codicology, Diplomatic, and Text Editing.

All courses are in Italian, English, or French.

The Professors come from different countries with the aim of introducing the students of the Diploma to a variety of methodological approaches and current research perspectives.

Teaching takes place in an international setting and in direct contact with the manuscript collections held in the numerous libraries and archives of Rome.

At the moment this programme is subject to the Covid-19 health measures issued by the Italian Government. It will be possible to attend courses in person, as long as this is allowed by the Italian health and national authorities in compliance with the indications they provide. Should new Covid-19-related restrictive measures be enforced in Italy (once the course has started or not), lectures will be guaranteed online. For updated information please monitor the website page on a regular basis.

Attendance can take three forms: annual (60 ECTS), modular (30 ECTS), and personalised (2 or 4 ECTS). The prerequisite for admission to the Diploma is a bachelor’s degree in humanities. Students coming from universities with an Erasmus+ agreement with FIDEM (see DEEM member universities) do not have to pay the enrolment fee. Application formhttps://fidemweb.org/application-form-2020-2021-f/

General coordination is by Doctor Massimiliano Lenzi (Sapienza, Università di Roma: [email protected]), in cooperation with Libera Università Maria Ss. Assunta (LUMSA) in Rome ([email protected])
