The Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program at Columbia University offers flexible opportunities to study the medieval and early modern worlds amidst the tremendous intellectual and cultural resources of New York City. Students are able to structure the degree to to their interests, whether they specialize in one eld or take an interdisciplinary approach. The program offers courses through a wide range of university departments, and students can choose to focus on any subject in the medieval and early modern eras in almost any geographical region (including Asia and the Americas). The degree is offered with both a full-time and a part-time option.
Students enjoy access to all Columbia University resources, including over sixty faculty associated with the program, and the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, with its important Medieval and Renaissance collections. In addition to the crowded schedule of seminars and lectures at Columbia, students are encouraged to take advantage of the intellectual and cultural riches of the New York City area: lectures, exhibits, events, and internship opportunities at institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Cloisters, the Morgan Library and Museum, the New York Public Library, the Frick Collection and Reference Library, and the Hispanic Society of America, as well as at neighboring universities.
The degree is appropriate both for those students who wish only to complete an M.A. and those contemplating applications to Ph.D. programs. Students will study languages relevant to their particular research interests, work with manuscripts and rare books from Columbia's collections, choose elective coursework from more than a dozen departments, and work with a faculty supervisor on an article-length M.A. thesis.
