ACMRS and MAP Joint Conference: Magic, Religion, and Science in the Global Middle Ages and Renaissance

Call for Papers: ACMRS and MAP invites session and paper proposals for our annual interdisciplinary conferenceFebruary 6–9, 2019 at the Embassy Suites Hotel Phoenix-Scottsdale. We welcome papers that explore any topicrelated to the study and teaching of the global Middle Ages and Renaissance and especially those that focus on the general theme of “Magic, Religion, and Science in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.”
 
Conference Publication: Selected papers focused on the conference theme of “Magic, Religion, and Science in the Middle Ages and Renaissance” will be considered for publication in the conference volume of the Arizona Studies in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance series, published by Brepols Publishers (Belgium).
 
Keynote Speaker: Bruce Janacek, North Central College and Executive Director, Sixteenth Century Society and Conference. Dr. Janacek's research has focused on the Black Death, the Italian Renaissance, European contact with the New World, the Reformation and the attendant Wars of Religion in France and the Holy Roman Empire, the Scientific Revolution, the “Crises of the Seventeenth Century” that include among other things, the Thirty Years War, the English Civil Wars and the “witch-craze,” and finally, the Enlightenment and the French Revolution.
 
Pre-Conference Manuscript Workshop: ACMRS will host a workshop on manuscript studies led by Dr. Timothy Graham, Director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of New Mexico. The workshop will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 6, and participation will be limited to the first 25 individuals to register. The cost of the workshop is $50 ($25 for students) and is in addition to the regular conference registration fee.
 
Pre-Conference Professionalization Workshop: Speak with interdisciplinary experts about how to market yourself, make connections, and deliver a polished presentation at an upcoming conference or professional venue. We especially encourage graduate students, junior faculty, advanced undergraduates, and anyone interested in making a strong impression, networking, and presenting your work to attend and bring your most burning professionalization questions. Registration is free and will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 6. Participation will be limited to first 25 individuals to register.
 
MAP Travel Awards: Graduate-student presenters who are MAP members are eligible to compete for the Michael T. and Phyllis J. Walton Graduate Travel Award to help defray expenses associated with travel to and presentation at the annual conference. Graduate students and new scholars who present at the conference are also eligible to compete for the MAP Founders’ Prizes. In addition, the John F. Benton Awards provides travel funds for all members of the Medieval Association of the Pacific—independent medievalists and graduate students in particular—who might not otherwise receive support from institutions.
 
Deadlines: We will accept proposals on a rolling basis until midnight, MST on November 1, 2018. We will respond within a week of submission. Please submit an abstract of 250 words and a brief CV to [email protected]and be sure to include audio/visual requirements and any other special requests; late requests may not be accommodated
