This interdisciplinary symposium will explore the relationship between the Jesuit enterprise and China in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We are broadly interested in issues of cultural exchange and translation, history of science, art and architectural theory in a global context, and Jesuit accommodation in both the religious and sociopolitical contexts.

Participants will include art historians and historians of science, with expertise in Imperial China and/or Jesuit Studies.  Florence Hsia (University of Wisconsin, Madison), Walter Melion (Emory University), Kristina Kleutghen (University of Washington, St. Louis), Jeffrey Muller (Brown University), and Eugenio Menegon (Boston University) will be presenting.
